Roar Shack is a collective of writers and artists, and over the coming months we’re going to bring you voices. Some of us come from fiction, some from memoir, some from poetry, and from music and performance and just about anything that leaves its own blood on the page. David Hernandez: David Hernandez is the recipient of a 2011 NEA Literature Fellowship in Poetry. His recent collection, Hoodwinked, won the Kathryn A. Morton Prize and is now available from Sarabande Books. His other collections include Always Danger, winner of the Crab Orchard Series in Poetry, and A House Waiting for Music. His poems have appeared in Ploughshares, The Threepenny Review, The Missouri Review, TriQuarterly, The Southern Review, and Poetry Daily. He is also the author of two YA novels, No More Us for You and Suckerpunch, both published by HarperCollins. David lives in Long Beach and is married to writer Lisa Glatt.
Bill Kenower: Bill Kenower is the Editor-in-Chief of Author magazine, for which he has interviewed hundreds of writers, from Caroline Kennedy and Nora Ephron, to William Gibson and David Rocklin. He writes a popular daily column on the intersection of creativity and everyday life, and is also the author of the novel One Year in Jeopardy and the forthcoming memoir No One Is Broken.”
Our July Live Write winner! Ameni Rosza: Long, long ago, Ameni Rozsa received some freak early encouragement that led her to believe this whole writing thing would be a cinch. Fortunately she knows better by now. She studied fiction and poetry at UT’s Michener Center for Writers before moving to Los Angeles to try to break into TV writing. She continues to work on spec in all three genres.
Live music from Robert Morgan Fisher. Robert Morgan Fisher’s third album Notes for a Novel, was released earlier this year to critical acclaim, worldwide airplay and 5-star reviews. Robert’s fiction and music are closely linked and he refers to himself as a “Narrative Engineer.” He was a Finalist for the 2005 International Songwriting Competition and also won the 2006 International Narrative Songwriting Competition. Two of his songs went #1 on the Neil Young Living With War: Songs of Our Time Website. His award-winning fiction has appeared in The Snake Nation Review, The Seattle Review, shaking like a mountain, Caffeine, Spindrift and on Bluerailroad.com. Live Writing: a thrilling feat of writerly improvisation!
What is Live Writing? As you arrive, you get to vote on a prompt. The winning prompt will be revealed to four intrepid authors – two of us and two of you audience types, onstage for all to see! We’ll all write to that prompt while Scott plays – it’s going to be impossible not to listen to him, but no one said this was going to be easy. Then the Live Writers will each read their just-written words, and the audience gets to vote! The winner will develop the work into a finished piece to be read at the next show. The piece will also be featured on Roar Shack’s Facebook page and online.
