I am offering an astonishing quantity of two and three-dimensional ephemera collected by Los Angeles sculptor Verna Lebow Norman (1919-2007) over her lifetime, throughout a two-weekend estate sale in the front two rooms of my house. Lots of mid-century magazines, greeting cards, maps, trinkets, souvenirs, calendars, photos, artist sketches and more.  Everything is priced for recession times.

For the sculptors in the community, know that there is also a large assortment of sculpture stands available, outdoor and indoor, some quite large.  Also clay sculpting tools, rolling carts, sculpture work stations (3), and a tall shelf on wheels for taking ceramics to the kiln.

This event is hosted by artist/author/musician Alicia Bay Laurel, who will make her legendary boho survival book Living on the Earth and 4 music CDs available for purchase, WITH autograph upon request.

Address: 842 So. Ogden Drive, Los Angeles CA 90036-4414.  Ogden is 2 blocks east of Fairfax Ave.  My block of Ogden is between Olympic and 8th St., and is only accessible from 8th St.  During the hours listed above, a parking pass is not required.

What does it look like backstage? What do the performers see when they look out across the footlights?   Los Angeles Historic Theatre Foundation’s “All About” series gives the public an insider’s look at these wonderful theatres and share parts of their histories – good and bad – as a way to encourage people to become actively involved in protecting and ensuring their futures.

Spirits with Spirits: The Tam O’Shanter Inn

GHOULA meets for cocktails in haunted places on the 13th of each month. “SPIRITS with SPIRITS” is a casual gathering of regional ghost hunters and those interested in ghost stories. Open to all, from the curious skeptic to the passionate phantom pursuer. Make friends, and toast a ghost! Let’s put the “Boo!” back into “booze.” All those who attend will receive a free G.H.O.U.L.A. button. If you already have one, please wear it so others can find you.

This month’s gathering will be at the historic, fairy-tale themed Tam O’Shanter’s Inn, which was not only Walt Disney’s favorite bar (and was one of the local inspirartions for Disneyland), but is also currently home to a few colorful ghosts.

Note: At this month’s “Spirits with Spirits,” GHOULA will be celebrating the release of Ghoula Press’ first book, Disneyland after Dark: An Unauthorized Guide to the Happiest (Haunted) Place on Earth. The book will be available for purchase, and the author will be present.

Esotouric’s Hotel Horrors & Main Street Vice crime bus tour

From the founding of the city through the 1940s, downtown was the true center of Los Angeles, a lively, densely populated, exciting and sometimes dangerous place. After many quiet decades, downtown is making an incredible return. But while many of the historic buildings remain, their human context has been lost.

This downtown double feature tour, hosted by Kim Cooper, Joan Renner and Richard Schave, is meant to bring alive the old ghosts and memories that cling to the streets and structures of the historic core, and is especially recommended for downtown residents curious about their neighborhood’s neglected history.

The Hotel Horrors portion is a true crime and oddities tour featuring some of the wildest, weirdest, goriest and most memorable happenings in historic hotels like the Alexandria, Rosslyn, Barclay and Cecil. Get on the bus to see inside some of these legendary locales and find out where Night Stalker Richard Ramirez liked to stay and the hotel that saw a visit from the Skid Row Slasher, plus which hotel was the choice of Columbian drug mules with cocaine in their platform shoes, what lobby hosted a small scale anarchist riot and where two traveling chocolate salesmen laughed so hard they fell backwards out a window to their deaths. Plus, you’ll learn the truth about the myth that Beth “The Black Dahlia” Short was last seen alive at the Biltmore and explore the fiery curse that repeatedly leveled the St. George Hotel. Also included are some light hearted stories to help the blood and gore go down.

The Main Street Vice portion is a social history tour celebrating the ribald, racy, raunchy old promenade where the better people simply did not travel, but kicks were had by all who did. Burlesque babes and dirty picture parlors, mummified western outlaws and old time tattoo parlors, wax museums and pawn brokers, “professors” offering sex lectures and magazine peddlers with nudie Marilyn Monroe calendars under the counter, sophisticated steak houses and nickel donut dives — these were the pleasures and the people to be found along Main during the first half of the 20th century, a street that every Angeleno knew offered more (yet less) of what could be seen anywhere else. On this tour, we’ll visit the scenes of some more unforgettable debaucheries and share stories of crime, smut, passion and commerce.

Climb aboard for a time travel journey back to the downtown that’s not there anymore, and the surprising amount of gems that survive.

RIPPED Book Party

DIY and indie rock tee-shirts finally get their due in the new book RIPPED:  TEESHIRTS FROM THE UNDERGROUND, edited by Huntington Park native Cesar Padilla and just published by Rizzoli.  Padilla is a vintage clothing pioneer and has a huge rock tee-shirt collection himself.  He’s also brought in other collectors to build out the tome, which also features essays by Lydia Lunch, Thurston Moore, Betsey Johnson, and other celebs.   Cynthia Plastercaster reads tonight as special guest.

This month’s meet-up will be at the Old Spaghetti Factory in Duarte (formerly a 1909 school house) which is said to be haunted by its former pupils.  Those interested in an evening of spaghetti, spumoni, and spirits should come out. The group will be gathered in the hidden “Hide-Away Room” next to the bar.
