We return to South Broadway, to the mezzanine of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/LesNocesDuFigaro\" target=\"_blank\">Les Noces du Figaro<\/a>, which was recently opened by the family behind&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.figarobistrot.com\/\">Figaro Bistro<\/a>&nbsp;in Los Feliz. This handsome space was formerly&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/site\/historylosangeles\/schaber-s-cafeteria\" target=\"_blank\">Schaber\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Cafeteria<\/a>&nbsp;(Charles F. Plummer, 1928), and the mezzanine features wonderful views of the <a href=\"http:\/\/cinematreasures.org\/theaters\/5\" target=\"_blank\">Los Angeles Theatre<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On the last Sunday of each month (returning from hiatus on Sunday, February 24th), <span class=\"caps\">LAVA<\/span>&nbsp;welcomes interested individuals to gather in downtown Los Angeles (noon-2pm), for a loosely structured conversational Salon featuring short presentations and opportunities to meet and connect with one another. If you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re interested in joining <span class=\"caps\">LAVA<\/span> as a creative contributor or an attendee, we recommend Salon attendance as an introduction to this growing community. You are encouraged to order food and beverages from the counter downstairs, and&nbsp;<em>bring your meal upstairs.&nbsp;<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><em> <\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><em><strong>Presentation One:<\/strong><\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><em> <\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><em>Social historian&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.calstatela.edu\/faculty\/mwild\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mark Wild<\/a>&nbsp;will present on the history of Street-Speaking in Los Angeles (1880-1940), the subject of his book <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ucpress.edu\/book.php?isbn=9780520256354\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Street Meeting: Multiethnic Neighborhoods in Early Twentieth Century Los Angeles<\/em> <\/a>(UC Press, 2005). This talk will focus on locations in downtown Los Angeles which served as nexuses for protest in early local labor, social justice and political movements. From Suffragettes, Women Christian Temperance Union organizers, Rescue Mission preachers, Wobblies, Socialists, Communists and everything between, Mark will illuminate a rich and forgotten history of downtown Los Angeles as a political space, a theme that has again become timely with the Occupy LA protests shining a light on the <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.laweekly.com\/informer\/2011\/12\/occupy_la_lapd_assisted_private_security.php\" target=\"_blank\">privatization<\/a> of downtown&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/blogdowntown.com\/2012\/08\/6969-pershing-square-task-force-implements-more\" target=\"_blank\">public<\/a> spaces.<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><em> <\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><em><strong>Presentation Two:<\/strong><\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><em> <\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><em>For the latest installment of urban historian Richard Schave\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s site-specific discussion series \u00e2\u20ac\u0153The Fl\u00c3\u00a2neur &amp; The City,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Richard (<a href=\"http:\/\/esotouric.com\" target=\"_blank\">Esotouric bus adventures<\/a>) is joined by architectural historian Nathan Marsak (<a href=\"http:\/\/1947project.com\" target=\"_blank\">1947project<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/onbunkerhill.org\" target=\"_blank\">On Bunker Hill<\/a>) for a slow motion drive through Broadway, Hill and Olive Streets&nbsp;<\/em><\/em><span style=\"font-size: 12.222222328186035px; line-height: 1.5;\">circa 1946<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12.222222328186035px; line-height: 1.5;\">. Their source is the Internet Archive&#8217;s&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12.222222328186035px; line-height: 1.5;\">recently discovered <a href=\"http:\/\/archive.org\/details\/1946CruisingDowntownLosAngeles...inColor\" target=\"_blank\">B-roll footage<\/a> filmed by Columbia for the Rita Hayworth vehicle <em><a href=\"http:\/\/astore.amazon.com\/bubble1-20\/detail\/B0001L3MEO\" target=\"_blank\">Down to Earth<\/a><\/em>. This is Beth Short\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s post-war city, a bright, populated and thriving Downtown that positively thrums with energy. Marvel at the neon lights, the late-night coffee houses, the drug stores, the all night theaters of Broadway, the street life. The slow motion sequences will be broken up with supporting photos of buildings in question. You can expect a fair amount of digressions, and a chance to ask questions. At the conclusion of the tour Nathan and Richard will take the group on <\/span><a style=\"font-size: 12.222222328186035px; line-height: 1.5;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lavatransforms.local\/flaneur-broadway-feb2013\" target=\"_blank\">short walking tour of Broadway<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 12.222222328186035px; line-height: 1.5;\"> from 6th Street to 4th Street and back again. The tour is free, but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lavatransforms.local\/flaneur-broadway-feb2013\" target=\"_blank\">registration<\/a> is required.
